Sens Round Table with Social Media Guests (Sept. 19, 2018)

On Wednesday evening (Sept. 19, 2018), a handful of Senators-related bloggers, podcasters, and social-media personalities were invited by the Senators to attend the preseason game against the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Canadian Tire Centre.

In attendance were Sens Callups, Sens Chirp, 6th Sens, Silver Seven Sens, and bRian5or6. We were given the opportunity to talk with Pierre Dorion (General Manager) and then later with Aimee Deziel (CMO), Janice Nicholson (head of digital media).

This is the audio from the round-table portions of those meetings. The quality is limited as it was not a formal interview setup and there was a lot of noise from the arena as pre-game warm-ups were getting underway.

The Pierre Dorion round table consists of the first 19 minutes. After that is the discussion with Aimee Deziel (new CMO). The audio for this section is limited as the warmups had started and there is a more background noise. However we've left it in for you and it can be useful to hear some of the marketing plans the team has, not only with better engaging digital media, but also some plans for the year.

It was a very encouraging conversation and hopefully just the first of many. We'd like to thank the Ottawa Senators again for the chance to participate, and thanks for letting us share the round table with our listeners.

The season is looking quite positive (and it’s not like we traded away an all star trophy winning defence man to do it)

The Sens continue on this week with further .500 hockey. The week is saved by a home win against Vancouver, but there’s still a lot of shuffling around - now more so on the defence.

Well, the Sens ended up getting screwed in game 6 but most fans are commenting on all the positives.

We decide to do the same and what better way to do that than bring Ian Mendes from TSN 1200 on to summarize the season. We regroup after the series loss against Montreal, look at what the roster is shaping up to and really just end all smiles. We’ll be back in July after free agency and the draft.

Season 3 Episode 19: The Playoff Preview!

At the end of the line and the 82 games are completed, the Sens improbably move on to the playoffs against the Montreal Canadians of whom the Sens match up against well.

It has been a regular season of ups and downs. From Andrew Hammond ending the season with a 20-1-2 record, the emergence of Mark Stone and Mike Hoffman to the return of Erik Karlsson to Norris Trophy caliber and the return and retirement of Daniel Alfredsson. This season also had some not so great moments having Bryan Murray and Mark Reeds battle with inoperable cancer, the firing of Paul Maclean and trying to recover from early season struggles.

Having zero changes outside of the Jason Spezza trade, the change in approach to the team by sitting veterans like Chris Phillips and holding back on others like Chris Neil and Jared Cowen has allowed the players to be young and hungry for competing in the regular season along with continuing off to the post season.

The team has played in 5 straight games that went to overtime or a shootout, and this week the Senators picked up 7 of a possible 8 points. Anderson re-injures his hand and Ottawa is left with no alternative in the case Hammond falters.

We’re finally back after a long hiatus. Luckily, we don’t do massive game summaries and just jump into things after a great game recap from CBInc on the Sens wins against the Sucks….err..Leafs.

Lots of talk about the roster as the team continues to fall in the standings. Pan tries to explain his Team Tank approach and Kardinal just can’t put himself hoping for the team to lose. We play a little armchair GM with what to do with Methot, we get a Facebook contribution from Liam, a couple e-mails from Labru and Blair Brown. We go into the All Star break so won’t be back for a couple of weeks, but we’d love to continue to hear from you!

Season 2 Episode 26: The Summer Episode

It has been a long time since we have gotten together for a show, and again, year after year, we say goodbye to another potential legacy player move out of the organization. This time though, we don’t seem as upset about Spezza moving on vs. Alfredsson last year. Is it because we got something in return? Is it that the team doesn’t seem to be a contending team next season? Is it that half of the fans have always been down on Spezza? We get some familiar faces back with Michalek staying and add a bit of experience and leadership with the addition of Legwand. We were also invited to the Sens Development camp and got exclusive access to the players, including a quick chat with Curtis Lazar and Fredrik Claesson - thanks again to Chris Moore and the Ottawa Senators for the invitation. We also look at the possibilities of goal songs for the year. A little more banter about the line up and signings around the league. Season 2 Episode 25: Mailing it In with Mendes!

We summarize the last game of the season, the post-season press conferences of Eugene Melnyk, Bryan Murray (we didn't bother to talk about Cyril Leeder as Pan already had enough math in the show) and give our opinions about where we think the team is going, where we want it to go, and how it might turn out.

Season 2 Episode 1: Be Podderer!

We’re back for our second season premiere because we ALL MISS HOCKEY! We look back at the Alfredsson presser and some (hopefully) final thoughts on him leaving the team. Pan punches possible holes in the stated $94 million losses since Melnyk’s reign.

We review the roster and upcoming potential spot openings and how players will fit in. There’s a little concern for when Cowen will return and what should be his compensation and term. Of course, the big talk in the town is who will be the next captain.

After reviewing what happened around the league including 2 new ownership groups, we look at the Olympic team and wrap things up from there.

Season 1 Episode 29: Senate Reform

We didn’t think much was going to come out of the summer show, but wow, what changes do we ever have. First, the name of the stadium changes to the “Canadian Tire Center” (air wrench). Then, a big hole is left in our chest after the Golden Gawd decides to leave the only team he’s ever played for.

The owner makes a plea to the public for support around the city after losing our icon, and we say good bye to some excellent young talent in Jakob Silfverberg and Stefan Noesen as well as knowing off the hop that if we jump onto the tank next year, we don’t get the pize of a quality pick. To bring back some tradition to the show, Shredder from Sens Underground joins us!

That said, we have the draft to speak about and have Kathryn Jean (@msconduct on twitter) to break down the Sens draft picks, and call up our good friend, Cathy Cardinal (@CathyCardinal) to give some up front info on Bobby Ryan. We look at some things around the league, look at some teams in the playoffs, announce the winners of the latest contest and get ready for the last week of the regular season where the Sens can hopefully clinch early.

A couple of guys come back from injury and K-Dawg leaves town. The owner sounds off on Matt Cooke and the injury to Karlsson at a VERY odd time. Speaking of odd – the supplemental discipline inconsistencies continue to baffle everyone.

Around the league, Pittsburgh is grabbing every free agent around the league for cheap and we get a special visit from Southern California by having a long time Groundhog on the show as Cathy Cardinal joins us. (TJ, don’t be hateful, we’ll have you on, just e-mail us!)

Here we go! We finally have more hockey to talk about. After watching a couple of open practices and participating in the open house, we are excited to see how the line up is shaping up and getting our first look at new acquisitions and some prospects up from the BSens. To help us out, we have Ben from Binghamton give us a breakdown of guys that he’s been looking at for a few years.

A couple big things in the news is who will play in goal and which D men to bring up and who would be in goal….and how local media is blowing things out of proportion.

We touch on updates on signings, big news in the buy outs of bad contracts and the surprising lack of trades.

Welcome back, groundhogs! It’s been a long and hard 4 months and we’re back with a new episode to discuss the available information on the CBA “Framework”, how it will impact some teams and how well the Sens look to be set up for the new salary cap.

We discuss the look of the line up and depth charts for who fits where and who could come up to the big team from Binghamton – and yes – as always, we have a goalie controversy, but for once, it’s a good one. Cowan’s injury has drastic impact on the blue line and we look at ways to fill them.

The compliance buyouts bring an interesting twist for teams to get below the cap, but we have to wait for the summer for that. This could cause budgetary and locker room issues around the league and will be very interesting to see.

Welcome back! There’s still not much new in regards to the progress of CBA talks, so we do a little house cleaning and speak to a couple Call-ups! Trying to survive with the lack of NHL hockey, we look at some of the alternatives by looking at the Sens abroad as well as the B-Sens and the CHL. Our guest Dan gives us a taste of what living with a bunch of Canuckle-heads is like and a look at some of our Western based prospects.

Around the league, we look at matches that aren’t necessarily made in heaven and a little more Leaf front office debacles. The release of John Davidson from the Blues is discussed and looking at possible places where he could improve existing teams.

We speak with Gabrielle, the first SCU Contest winner for the Most Disappointing Sens Moment as she opens her prize, and reads a beauty e-mail from Homer.

Season 1 Episode 3: Momma said Lock You Out!

WELCOME EVERYONE TO THE SENS CALL-UPS……ok, we really can’t keep that up. Well, well, what’s to say about what’s going on in the NHL? In one word NOTHING! In episode 3, we talk about what we have heard about the CBA negotiations (or lack there of) and look at the teams that have lost money and what, in our humble opinions, needs to be done to change that and get the game back on the ice. Looking at the signing bonus payouts and other loopholes, we touch on who is getting paid and who isn’t.

Bingo looks like it will be a great point of interest for the year as well as the AHL as a whole. We look forward to hearing stories of who will shine in the farm team and how the international hockey atmosphere will look.

Kardinal looses it over the Cyril Leeder speech and we give our kudos to those team employees who have either lost their jobs or are on reduced work arrangements. Comparatively to other teams who state that they haven’t laid anyone off, these are the people most affected by the lockout.

The new OHL rules around fighting seem interesting and effective. Will the NHL look at it? Will they even consider it for themselves?

No SCU podcast is complete without a little Whiskey Tango Foxtrot action on the length of contracts vs. the league CBA demands. Some make sense, others don’t.

We wrap things up with a little house cleaning and Pan announces the winner of the SCU Contest Prize! Thanks all for playing and we’ll have more as time goes by.

Season 1 Episode 2: The Golden Gawd Demands Another Episode!

So let it be written so let it be done! We’re back with a second summer show, as how can you really let news like this go by without talking about it? That’s right folks! He’s coming back! Your fearless leader, the blonde Adonis, the Golden Gawd is coming back for at least one more season (or eight more depending on which Call-Up you ask). Driven by leadership, the love of the game, the team and the city, the NHL's current longest serving captain will be back in a Sens uniform at season’s start, plus this happens without a contract extension or more money being thrown at him. That’s the definition of leadership right there.

We also touch on the future of leadership beyond Alfie and the drastic change from previous years with now having a clog up on offence while shockingly looking thin on the blue line and try to fill these spots with the prospects that are coming up.

Around the league there has been some noise with Nash finally moving to the Rangers, Nashville getting their hands tied with an offer sheet and we talk about other big names on the move. All of this is of course dependent on the CBA being finalized in time for hockey to start.

Pan gets heated over recent Tim Thomas comments and Kardinal goes a little Whiskey Tango Foxtrot on the topic of the Raffi Torres suspension and appeal. We read our first e-mail from a long time groundhog and launch our very first SCU contest.

Season 1 Episode 1: Game On!

Welcome to the first episode of Sens Call-Ups! In this episode, we break through a lot of nervous energy and talk about the summer that was and what’s on the horizon starting with the cup winning champs and some controversy within the Canadian media around the playoffs and a look back as to how the Sens did in their first round contest.

We talk about the awards ceremony and discuss as to what effect being nominated for the coach of the year may have on MacLean and his relationship with the refs. Also we look at who’s in and who’s out in free agency and who has re-upped with the Sens.

Touched on are the newest draft picks and look at Cody Ceci and the Senator’s pledge to look at local talent. We go into some detail about the trade in acquiring Marc Methot for a great guy in Nick Foligno. Losing Nick and his wife from the community is a big loss, but we wish him all the best in Columbus. Oh, and Figs better stay away from Anderson when he plays here!

We have our very first special guest to discuss the potential need for new enforcers. No, not Wayne Gretzky! Not Brenda Shannahan, and definitely not Mats Sundin! WE HAVE PUDDLE DUCK!

After a quick look around the league to talk about other big name signings, we look at the CBA offer by the NHL and, although worried, are hopeful for hockey next year.
